Education Minister Pushes for Centralized Approach to Digitalization in German Education System

08.08.2023

Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger is working on making the educational landscape in Germany fit for the future. To this end, she wants to improve cooperation between the federal and state governments.

Im Interview mit „The Pioneer“ said FDP Vice and Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger: “digitalization is certainly an issue where we simply have to think much more centrally.” She emphasized that the different organizational levels in the area of Education have to work much better together. It is helpful for this “if the planning comes directly from a single source,” explained Stark-Watzinger. She advocated that in the future there should be “either very close cooperation right from the start or more clear decision-making processes”. Local schools themselves know best what the children and young people need. However, the Minister of Education is convinced that the federal government can provide the best support for major issues such as digitization, which affect everyone.

For Stark-Watzinger it is clear that the educational policy problems have not become less in recent years. “We also negotiate a lot constructively with the countries about it – for example at Starting Chances Program, which is intended to give special support to around 4,000 schools with a high proportion of socially disadvantaged pupils. A big lever for more equal opportunities.” Her claim is “that we together improve the overall educational level of the students and finally reduce the number of school dropouts”, according to the deputy FDP chairwoman. “We mustn’t give away any potential. Anything else would be bad for us as a business location.”

This applies in particular to the successor to the one that will expire next year Digitalpaktes, which has particularly promoted the purchase of hardware in schools since 2019. “Next time it has to be faster: less bureaucracy and better implementation. The federal states still have to do their homework. We like to do ours,” said the education minister in an interview with The Pioneer.

“We have seen that it is not enough to just invest in technology, i.e. in new tablets and laptops, we also need IT experts who take care of the technology in the schools,” explained Bettina Stark-Watzinger Interview with the Rheinische Post” out of. It must therefore be ensured that these measures and the staff can also be financed. The Minister of Education also called for the processes to be reduced in bureaucracy and for the money to be distributed to the schools in a more targeted manner than before. “Accordingly, I am emphatically committed to ensuring that the federal government makes its contribution to a Digital Pact 2.0.”
