Mainz (dpa / lrs) – Eight students from seven cities in Rhineland-Palatinate have been awarded for special skills in Latin and ancient Greek. In the state competition for ancient languages ​​called “Certamen Rheno-Palatinum” (Rhineland-Palatinate competition), they first had to excel in a translation test and then with a term paper on ancient literature. A total of 331 students from grades 11 and 12 took part, as the Ministry of Education announced on Friday.

When honoring the eight best in Bad Sobernheim, Minister of Education Stefanie Hubig (SPD) said: “Knowing ancient languages ​​is still a good tool for the new world.” Latin and ancient Greek are the fundamental languages ​​of European culture. “Ancient languages ​​open new doors.” The organizer of the competition, which has been organized for the 36th time, is the Ministry of Education together with the Rhineland-Palatinate state association of the German Association of Classical Philologists (DAV).

The four students qualified for the final round of the competition. In a colloquium before a jury of experts from the University of Mainz, up to three scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation will be discussed.
