Education – Berlin – Senate Department checks Corona self-tests for teachers – Education

Berlin (dpa / bb) – The Berlin Senate Department for Education is examining the opportunities that corona self-tests offer teachers. A decision has not yet been made, but the issue is being voted on, said a spokesman for the Senate Department for Education on Wednesday. The “Berliner Morgenpost” had previously reported on it (Wednesday). According to the spokesman, the education administration is currently coordinating with the health administration and the Charité.

The self-tests are not only intended for teachers, but also, for example, for educators in schools and the staff in the secretariat. This would require around 40,000 tests per week. In Hessen, the “Safe School” study is to investigate the use of such rapid antigen tests by lay people. Around 1000 teachers are supposed to take smears themselves every other day and then examine them with a quick test.

According to the health ministers of the federal states, the goal is to prevent infected but symptom-free teachers from entering the school. As stated in the resolution of the Conference of Health Ministers (GMK) on Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Health will “quickly create the legal basis for carrying out a self-test by appropriately trained teachers”.

The GEW Berlin warned on Tuesday in a letter to the Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) of the growing risk of infection for educators and children with the corona virus. It states that a large number of educators and teachers assessed their risk of infection as very high, but did not feel that their health at work was adequately protected.

The teachers had the impression that their illness was accepted with approval. The GEW called on Müller to make health protection in schools and daycare centers a top priority and to reduce the size of the learning groups.
