Ecuador TV Hijacked by Armed Men amid State of Emergency: Signal Currently Unavailable

The signal is currently unavailable.

In Ecuador, unknown armed men hijacked television. The media went on air amid a wave of kidnappings and violence in the country after the president declared a state of emergency.

About it writes CNN.

Men wearing hoods and holding guns forced the staff to lie down on the studio floor. More and more, in the background, shots and screams were heard. Video of the incident has been made available on social media, but the live broadcast signal is currently unavailable.

The Ecuadorian National Police said specialized units responded to the emergency.

What’s happening in the country

On Monday, January 8, President Daniel Noboa declared a national state of emergency after gang leader Adolfo “Fito” Macias escaped from prison in Guayaquil. Just a few hours after the emergency was declared, the country was hit by several explosions, kidnappings and riots in prisons. At least 7 police officers are now known to have been kidnapped in three different cities.

“The rise in violence will test the new president, who won the second round of voting last year by promising to fight rising crime rates,” the journalists write.

As noted, the deteriorating security situation in the country is largely caused by competing criminal organizations that stage brutal and often public demonstrations of violence on the streets and prisons of the country in the struggle for control of drug trafficking routes.

According to police, this week alone:

  • during one of the carjackings, during which three agents were detained, an explosive device was planted and detonated in the car in which the police were traveling;
  • in Esmeraldas, in the north-west of the country, two cars were set on fire, one of which caused a fire at a petrol station;
  • in the capital Quito, police discovered a burnt-out car with traces of gas cylinders inside, residents reported on social media after hearing a loud explosion in the area;
  • police received a report of an explosion on a pedestrian bridge near Quito;
  • Law enforcement officers responded to more than 20 emergency situations in different parts of the country.

So far there is no information about casualties as a result of the explosions.
