Eating 2 Kiwis a Day: New Study Shows it Can Replace the Need For Vitamin C Supplements

A new study published last month in the journal Foods found that eating two SunGold kiwis a day for six weeks increased your daily intake of ascorbic acid (or vitamin C) by 150 milligrams, eliminating the need for additional vitamin C. Nutritional supplement that also has a variety of health benefits.

Dr. Laura Purdy said: “Kiwi fruit is known to strengthen the immune system, especially during cold and flu season. A strong immune system is key to helping protect yourself from viral infections.”

While the study in Foods was small — consisting of just 24 healthy men aged 25 to 60 with no history of type 1 or type 2 diabetes or glucose intolerance — the results are still impressive. When most people want to increase their vitamin C intake, the first thing they usually think of is oranges or nutritional supplements. However, nutritionist Jacqueline Wyman said the kiwifruit used in this study contained the highest amount of vitamin C per gram (and more than green kiwis). In addition to being high in vitamin C, kiwi fruit can also replace less nutritious snacks when used as a snack, helping to improve overall nutrition and health.

Although kiwi fruit contains large amounts of vitamin C, there is limited research on whether it can prevent colds or flu. Still, researchers did find in a 2012 study that eating kiwi fruit may shorten the duration of colds. In addition, research has also found that regular consumption of kiwi fruit can increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (also known as “good” cholesterol), reduce triglycerides, and lower blood pressure. If golden kiwi fruit is eaten together with iron-rich foods, it can also help anemia patients increase their iron content.

Wyman recommends incorporating kiwi fruit into your daily routine this winter, such as as part of a midday snack or dessert, along with other fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin C. This is a practical way to take vitamin C because small doses are easier to absorb than larger doses (such as nutritional supplements).
