East | Waste treatment. Ultimate non-recyclable waste: per capita production increases in 2020

Bad news for the environment. In 2020, in Moselle-Est, we each produced more non-recyclable waste. The kg per capita ratio increased between 2019 and 2020 for the production of blue bag waste and ultimate waste. “We go from 127 kg per inhabitant of blue bags to 134 kg per inhabitant for the year and from 90 kg of ultimate waste to 92 kg per inhabitant per year”, we confirm at Sydeme , household waste union. The overall tonnage of this non-recoverable final waste remains the same, around 110,000 tonnes per year. But the population of the territory of Moselle-Est and Alsace hunchback has fallen by 2,000 inhabitants.

A containment effect with cleaning of cellars and attics

How to explain this phenomenon ? 2020 remains a year apart. “With the periods of confinement, families carried out cleaning operations in cellars and attics”, advance Roland Roth, President of Sydeme . Then, with the coronavirus epidemic, potentially contaminated rubbish usually intended for green (bio-waste) or orange (recyclable) bags was diverted as final waste. “The volume of diverted waste is estimated at 1,361 tonnes,” reports Roland Roth. Another unforeseen event: the Sydeme sorting center suspended its activities for four weeks due to the health risk for workers carrying out manual sorting. As the collection of orange bags continued, with no possibility of storage, recyclables were disposed of by incineration, “for 1,600 tonnes”.

Decreased elimination capacities in usual partners

Another problem: the tonnage of blue bags remained high, but the capacity for final waste disposal declined. The Velsen incinerator was, for example, stopped in November. Suddenly, while the maximum treatment capacity of the usual service providers has been reached, the Sydeme finds itself with 5,500 to 7,000 tonnes of ultimate waste to be eliminated by December 31.

The president was forced to enter into an emergency contract without advertising or competition with the Pizzorno group for landfill in Aboncourt (district of Thionville). Cost: 90 € / tonne to which is added the TGAP (tax on polluting activities) at 25 € / tonne.

61.4% of ultimate waste is burned

Note that 61.4% of our final waste is incinerated (67,600 tonnes per year) in Saarland in Velsen and Neunkirchen, somewhat at Haganis in Metz. The rest is buried by Suez especially in Téting-sur-Nied.
