Best football game of 2023
The name change doesn’t matter, EA Sports FC 24 essentially plays like the previous titles. Once again Electronic Arts has delivered the best football game on the market that can win the hearts of football fans with all the licenses and modes as well as the familiar gameplay. However, there are still errors in old titles that the developers still haven’t taken care of. This is completely incomprehensible, but it doesn’t detract from the very good overall impression.

EA released the first game in the FIFA series in 1993. Until 2022, there has been a game release every year with the FIFA name and number. FIFA 23 was the last game with the name of the world football association that fans can hardly imagine without. In fact, it is still unusual to say “EA Sports FC” and not simply “FIFA”.
Further collaboration was probably too expensive for FIFA, but Electronic Arts doesn’t seem to mind that much. The game remains the same, only the name is different. With the EA series there is only one real football simulation that is relevant on the market. The fans know that, everyone who works in the games industry knows that.

In addition, EA still holds the key licenses for more than 19,000 players, 700 teams, 30 leagues and 100 stadiums. The Bundesliga, the Premier League – all the strong leagues in world football are there. There is an authentic football feeling, even without “FIFA”.
Round gameplay with precise actions
In terms of gameplay, it is once again the best current football simulation that you can play. The gameplay seems a little slower than that in FIFA 23, which is good for the realism. Pass relays are comfortable as usual.
The new “precise passes” allow even more precise passes. If you want to shoot even more accurately, set the “Precision” shooting assist. This way the AI doesn’t mess up your shot attempts too much.

New animations noticeably flash here and there. Overall, the movements depicted appear more realistic in their diversity. For example, sometimes you see deliberate shots that first hit the ground and then fly towards the goal – great.

Graphically the title looks very good anyway. The better-known stars in particular, for example Erling Haaland or Federico Chiesa, are impressively portrayed. The hair of these superstars has turned out really great. Yes, look at that hair! You rarely see such chic hair on your head in video games. Really good!
However, footballers who do not belong to the top elite were only given less impressive details. The following applies here: the better known the player, the more detailed the graphics. Although this is strange, given the scale and effort involved, it is somewhat understandable that it was handled this way.
New camera perspectives are also cool, such as the referee’s first-person perspective, which adds even more drama to the scene after a foul. The close-ups of the audience, some of whom really freak out, also add to the mood. EA really delivers atmosphere here.
Auditorily, the football simulation is once again varied. The soundtrack offers a variety of songs across various genres.
The scope is enormous
You are also spoiled for choice when it comes to the mode. Do you just play normal kick-off games, tournaments, the virtual Bundesliga (competitive online mode), the street football mode Volta, or something else?
Ultimate Team
Of course, the most popular mode is also there again: Ultimate Team. Here women are involved for the first time and with so-called evolution cards you can upgrade qualified player cards by completing certain mission objectives.
It’s fun again to build a new team in Ultimate Team, but unfortunately the menu in the mode isn’t that good. Sometimes it feels like you’re navigating through views too often, more often than you should. Couldn’t they have come up with a faster and more thoughtful menu design? All the steps and loading times as well as retrieving the rewards take so much time that you could have played a half in kick-off mode.
Microtransactions back
Anyone who wants to play Ultimate Team competitively will either invest a lot of time or real money to buy the premium currency FC Points. But since you’re already paying money for the game itself, perhaps every year, this may seem a bit too expensive. We rather recommend playing Ultimate Team without purchasing FC Points. It’s also so fun when you play against the AI with your dream team every now and then and play an online game every now and then.

Above you can see the variety of modes, as shown in the main menu. Pretty much all of the modes were there in previous games, so it’s not a big achievement to keep the scope as good as before. A really big innovation in the game, such as a career mode, is missing from EA Sports FC 24. But that won’t stop most fans from buying it.
