Moto GP. Morbidelli wins in Valencia but the World Championship belongs to Mir

The Italian from Yamaha wins at the penultimate GP of the season at Ricardo Tormo. The Suzuki Spaniard is crowned World Champion

Party for two in Valencia: Joan Mir wins the MotoGP title, bringing Suzuki back to the top of the world 20 years after Kenny Roberts Jr’s world championship, and Franco Morbidelli hits his third success of the season, outlining his profile as a reliable and mature rider to fight for the big target. A wonderful race that of the Italian of Yamaha Petronas who at the finish line of Ricardo Tormo precedes Jack Miller’s Ducati Pramac, beaten after a majestic close duel in the last lap, and Pol Espragraro, 3rd with a Ktm now firmly on the ball. The 7th place is enough for Joan Mir to be crowned champion, amidst the tears of the princpal Suzuki team, Davide Brivio.

Morbidelli in bubble

His bubble continues: Franco Morbidelli is in a magical moment, he wins for the third time of the season and confirms that he is the most continuous and profitable, both of the Italian riders and those of Yamaha, although his’ horse, the M1 is that last year, but he knows how to manage it better. The seventh victory of 2020 for the Iwata manufacturer comes on the day when his other standard bearers struggle: Quartarato falls in the early stages, Vinales is only 10th, Rossi even 12th. Believing in this Morbidelli, however, should be the best investment for the future for Yamaha. In the ten finishers, in order: 4. Alex Rins, 5. Brad Binder, 6. Miguel Oliveira, 8. Andrea Dovizioso and 9. Aleix Espargaro with Aprilia.

Mir crowned

Joan Mir’s coronation comes with a wise race, which started from 12th place on the grid and conducted safely without taking excessive risks: his rivals were far away and the Majorcan just needed to create a sufficient bearing on the Morbidelli, now second in the world championship, to put on the crown. Joan Mir thus puts herself in the wake, in the roll of honor, to Marc Marquez, giving a glimpse of the potential to challenge him directly when the Martian returns to the best of his ability. Mir, above all, once again polishes the star of Suzuki and his recent world champions, from Kenny Roberts Junior, the last, to Kevin Schwantz, perhaps the most iconic one. Sober, but hungry; gritty and self-confident, aggressive and mentally solid, Mir had a perfect season, with consistency of results and the ability to sink the shots regularly in a world of great uncertainty: he is not the rider who has won the most – Quartararo and Morbidelli have three wins – but the one who ran the best and most profitable way.

The race

At the start, a great shot by Morbidelli, who sets the pace on Miller and Pol Espargaro while behind him many big players are struggling. Mir climbs up wisely, Quartararo falls and throws away the very small remaining world championship chances and the other Yamahas struggle. Rins recovers, Nakagami throws away a possible podium, falling unexpectedly in an attack on Pol Espargaro and Mir controls a placement that would crown him champion. From mid-race Miller begins forcing, with a softer compound than Morbidelli at the front that holds up well at the distance. On the penultimate lap the lunge, then the reply of Morbidelli who closes the door in his face a second time and in the close skirmishes of the last curves he bends Miller’s ardor with determination and intelligence. Party for him, and for Mir: the best protagonists of this crazy world
