Dutch Safety Board will further investigate fatal flat fire Arnhem NOW

The Dutch Safety Board (OVV) is going to further investigate the fatal flat fire in Arnhem, the council reports Thursday. During the fire, a family was trapped in the elevator of the flat during the New Year. The father and his four-year-old son were killed.

During the investigation, the council will look at the design of the hall and the escape routes of the apartment. It also investigates the use of lifts in the event of a fire and the deployment of the fire brigade.

Experts previously reported that the flat was fireproof, but the council still believes that “sufficient safety lessons can be learned,” said a spokesperson.

The fire on New Year’s Day came about because fireworks were set on a couch in the porch of the apartment. The couch caught fire, and the apartment lift was filled with smoke.

The family was there at that time. The mother and the eight-year-old daughter were seriously injured in the fire.

Two boys aged twelve and thirteen are suspected of being involved in the fire. Due to personal circumstances, the boys’ detention has been suspended.

The OVV already did an exploratory investigation into the fire. In the event of major incidents, such as the spark of rain in Scheveningen and the container disaster at the Wadden, the Council carries out more frequent investigations.
