Dutch roads are stuck again since the end of working from home advice | Inland

In the past four weeks, traffic jams during the morning rush hour at peak times have averaged 196 kilometers in length. That is slightly longer than during the same period in 2019 – the last year before the pandemic – and much longer than the 76 kilometers in the first two months of this year. The study looked at traffic jams on national roads. These are mainly highways (A-roads) and expressways (N-roads).

Two weeks ago, at the peak of the morning rush hour, there was even 270 kilometers of traffic jams. A lot of rain fell in the second half of that week. “Last week the weather picture was much better and the average morning rush hour was 190 kilometers,” writes Rijkswaterstaat.

The evening rush hours are also getting busier, according to the researchers. But that increase is more gradual and has been going on for some time, starting at the end of January. Last Thursday was at its peak 430 kilometers of traffic jams. That is the highest quotation of the year so far.

Rijkswaterstaat has noticed that it is especially busy on Tuesdays and Thursdays during peak hours, both in the morning and in the evening. It was also the busiest on these days before the arrival of the corona virus.
