‘Dutch people stuck on cruise ship’, 7000 former healthcare workers want to help

Where the Dutch are stranded abroad and want to go home, there are also people who prefer to stay away, such as Oussama el Maimouni. He lives and works in Taiwan. “It is actually largely here business as usualhe says in it NOS Radio 1 News. “That’s because Taiwan has taken preventative measures from day 1 that are relatively simple, so I’m kind of used to that now.”

Taiwan learned from the SARS outbreak in 2002 and took strict action a few weeks ago when the first infections were reported in China. The number of infections in Taiwan is now at 100. No deaths have been reported.

According to El Maimouni, all schools were closed for two weeks at the beginning of the outbreak. People were also checked for their temperature at an early stage and mouth masks are mandatory in many places. “That has been going on for almost two months now,” he says. “Those are relatively small things that I no longer look up to.”

Life goes on quite normally in Taiwan. “I’m going to have a nice lunch on the beach later on. I just work, I go to work out in the evening, get up in the weekends, so yes, nothing has really changed in that respect,” says El Maimouni.
