Due to Cigarettes, European Inflation Prints the Highest Record Since 1997!

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Inflation in the European region soared and set a record high since 1997 ago. Inflation rates in European countries penetrated the 5% mark at the end of December 2021.

Launching Reuters on Saturday (8/1/2022), the inflation rate rose from 4.9% in November and was well above the target set by the European Central Bank (ECB) of 2%.

However, the ECB still believes that the current inflation trend is only temporary and will gradually decline in 2023, after reaching its highest level this year.

The upward trend in inflation in the European region cannot be separated from the surge in prices caused by rising gas and electricity prices in the last few months.

At the end of last year, there was an annual increase in energy prices of up to 26%, far ahead of other products surveyed by Eurostat. Meanwhile, prices for food, alcohol and tobacco rose 3.2% above industrial goods at 2.9% and services at 2.4%.

The highest price increases occurred in Spain at 6.7% and Germany at 5.7%. Moderate gains occurred only in Italy and France, according to Eurostat data.
