Drought: almost the entire department of Eure-et-Loir turns red

The prefect of Eure-et-Loir, Françoise Souliman, announced, this Thursday, August 4, an extension of the measures to limit the use of water, which now concern almost the entire department, with the exception of around thirty of municipalities in the north-west of the territory.

“The hydrological situation has been causing us a lot of concern for the past month, as in the majority of departments. We have taken an important step. We have almost completely gone red. Only the extreme north of the department is preserved.

State services closely monitor the flow of rivers, the state of surface water in some twenty basins (Eure, Ozanne, Yerre, Conie, Drouette, etc.), the level of groundwater, but also the quality of drinking water distributed to consumers.

The drop in water consumption goes from 30 to 40% in Eure-et-Loir

“Fifteen days ago, we decided, after a fairly difficult meeting with the various players concerned, to reduce water consumption by 30%. The efforts have paid off, but with the extremely high temperatures and the use of water which has not decreased enough, we have decided to ask each user to reduce their water consumption by 40%”, announces the prefect of ‘Eure-et-Loir, which took two new decrees. They will come into effect on Friday August 5th.

Specific measures in the Chartrain basin

The prefecture has issued a specific decree to regulate the use of groundwater in the Chartres basin, more specifically in the perimeter of influence of the drinking water boreholes of Francourville and Prunay-le-Gillon, where the water supply does not is not the same as for the entire department.

The municipalities concerned are Chartres, Berchères-les-Pierres, Champhol, Gellainville, Le Coudray, Lèves, Lucé, Luisant, Mainvilliers, Poisvilliers, Morancez, Corancez and Saint-Prest.

Édouard Brodhag, deputy director of the Departmental Directorate of Territories (DDT) of Eure-et-Loir, deciphers:

“In this sector, we are on the Craie aquifer which is of very good quality. We want to avoid the risk of pollution of this body of water, which may be very useful in the future for our children. Measures are taken so that the red line is not crossed. »

In the agricultural boreholes present on this perimeter, irrigation is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., with the exception of desiccated potatoes for harvest.

“We are giving ourselves two weeks to see what these measures do. A new meeting is scheduled for August 17, ”provides the prefect of Eure-et-Loir, who intends to intensify controls in the days to come.

Forest roads closed in Eure-et-Loir until August 7

“The objective is to avoid finding oneself in a situation that is too degraded to approach the start of the school year in September when activity will resume”, justifies Françoise Souliman. For the moment, no water supply disruption has been observed in Eure-et-Loir.

How to limit the risk of fires. While the whole of the hexagonal territory is affected by a new wave of drought, the prefecture of Eure-et-Loir recalls that it is “essential to respect the instructions of caution to limit the risk of fire”. Knowing that “nine out of ten fires are of human origin”, according to the prefecture, residents are called upon to adopt simple precautionary measures : do not smoke near fields and forests; do not throw cigarette butts in nature; do not park a vehicle on grassy areas, since a hot catalytic converter can cause a fire; do not carry out work near vegetation and provide a fire extinguisher within easy reach; do not light any flame sources, including barbecues, around wooded areas or fields; give the alert without delay in the event of a fire.
