Aged 3 and 14, the two girls died Sunday morning after a tree fell on their tent at a campsite in Tuscany, reports the Ansa news agency.
The two girls were sleeping in their tent with their third sister and their parents when a severe thunderstorm caused a tree to fall. The youngest victim died instantly, the oldest dying a little later in hospital from her injuries. The eldest of the family, 19, comes out with a few minor injuries. The parents were not injured.

According to Ansa, the accident took place around 7 a.m. on Sunday at the Mare campsite in Marina di Massa, a seaside town located about 120 kilometers north-west of Florence.

Originally from Turin, the family was there on vacation. The tree, a 4.5-meter poplar, fell due to a severe thunderstorm, as various parts of northern Italy are experiencing severe weather.
