A Young Patient’s Battle
Nicole was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 28, a condition characterized by the degeneration of brain cells. It began with a tremor in her right hand, which worsened after the birth of her first child. Despite her young age, she received a misdiagnosis due to the common association of Parkinson’s with older individuals.

Nicole’s life took a positive turn when she underwent deep brain stimulation at the Cleveland Clinic in November of 2022. Dr. Andre Machado, a renowned surgeon, performed the procedure, which involves the implantation of a device often referred to as a pacemaker for the brain. By delivering electrical stimulation to specific areas of the brain, this intervention helps restore proper function to degenerating brain cells.
Living with Parkinson’s Disease

Nicole first attributed her tremors to her lifestyle and job demands. The severity of her symptoms increased after her pregnancy, and she even noticed similarities between her tremors and those of the elderly patient she cared for prior to her diagnosis. Unfortunately, her initial doctors misdiagnosed her condition, leaving her desperate for an effective treatment plan.

Initially hesitant, Nicole eventually found herself open to the deep brain stimulation surgery. Having been through the disappointment of an unattainable stem cell trial, she realized she could no longer postpone seeking a solution to improve her quality of life.
