Dozens killed in Baghdad suicide bombing

A suicide attack in the Iraqi capital Baghdad has killed at least 35 people. That number is likely to rise, because people are in critical condition in hospital, health workers say to Reuters news agency.

The bomb exploded in a busy market in the Sadr City neighborhood of eastern Baghdad. Many Muslims did their shopping there tonight for the Feast of Sacrifice.

According to Reuters, Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iraqi President Barham Salih has condemned the attack on Twitter. “We will not rest until terrorism is cut off at its roots,” he wrote.

It is the third time this year that a bomb has exploded in a market in the densely populated district. In April, four people were killed in a car bomb attack in Sadr City. In January, 32 people were killed in a double suicide attack on a busy clothing market in Baghdad.

That was the first suicide attack in the Iraqi capital in a long time. In the years before, Islamic State carried out regular attacks in Baghdad. Violence abated after the terrorist organization was largely driven out of Iraq.
