The vaccination campaign against Covid – the disease triggered by the coronavirus – started today across the European Union, a few days behind Britain (which, despite being still part of the EU, started early: and here we explain why).
It is causing some controversy the number of doses delivered to Italy for the first day, and the comparison between the different European countries.
In particular, the German health minister, Jens Spahn, spoke of a first shipment for his country of 151,125 doses, arriving as early as December 26th. Three other shipments, totaling 1.9 million doses, are expected to arrive in Germany on December 28, December 30 and during the first week of January.
In Italy the first ones have arrived at the moment 9,750 doses. The Minister of Health has clarified that the doses delivered to all European countries for December 27 are symbolic in number: the actual distribution will start from the week starting December 28, and about 470 thousand doses will arrive in Italy every week. According to the contract, Pfizer-BionTech and Moderna are expected to deliver 8.749 million doses and 1,346 doses to Italy in the first quarter of 2021. In recent days, the German weekly The mirror had argued that the European Union had limited the number of doses reserved to Pfizer and BioNTech – US and German pharmaceutical companies – in order not to disadvantage the French Sanofi. Norway and Sweden

Serbia
Premier Ana Brnabic – who received the country’s first dose of the vaccine on December 24 – spoke of a first batch of 4,875 doses.
