Donald Trump’s election campaign is in full swing. Like his rivals within the Republican Party, he travels far and wide to win back the trust of the American people.
At the weekend, the trip went to the city of Newton in the state of Iowa. There, the former president spoke about the American Civil War during an election campaign meeting.

Trump believes the civil war could have been avoided through negotiations, and that former US President Abraham Lincoln could have done more to avoid the bloodbath that lasted from 1861 to 1865.
– So many mistakes were made. It was something I think we could have negotiated, to be honest. All the people died. So many people died, Trump said during the meeting according to CNN.
The American broadcaster also writes that Trump has argued that the fight to end American slavery was ultimately unnecessary.

There is a Republican caucus in Iowa on January 15. Trump’s Republican challengers, such as Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, have also campaigned in the state recently.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley came under fire when she did not mention slavery when she was asked about the causes of the American Civil War just over a week ago.
Last week, she apologized for the omission during an election campaign meeting.
– I should have said slavery, but in my mind it goes without saying that everyone associates the Civil War with slavery, Haley said according to CBS News.

In her answer, she said that the civil war was “basically about how the state should be governed, freedoms and what people could and could not do”, reports the channel.
Haley also mentioned that she will pardon Donald Trump if she becomes president and he ends up in prison.
