Denver US President Donald Trump wants to fight to the end. He has still not admitted his electoral defeat and insists on exploring all legal ways to hold on to power.

There’s more to the tough course than just a man who doesn’t like to lose. Because as soon as Trump is no longer in office, he himself faces a series of lawsuits. These in turn could also damage the reputation of his family company, which has been battered by his time in office and by the corona crisis.

As things stand, the best prospects are a criminal investigation by the New York District Attorney Cyrus Vance. Among other things, he is taking action against Trump and his company because of possible hush money payments, which Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen is said to have paid to two alleged lovers.

However, court records suggest that Vance has expanded its criminal investigation to include potential insurance, tax and banking fraud. Vance continues to fight for access to Trump’s tightly guarded tax records.

In Washington, meanwhile, there has long been speculation about whether Trump could pardon himself. This case has never happened in US history, so there are no clear court rulings on it.

Legal trouble on many fronts

Trump could theoretically pardon himself as a precaution to protect himself against possible criminal prosecution. In order to check whether the pardon is valid, a federal attorney would have to indict Trump and the then former US president would have to refer to his pardon. Then a judge would decide the matter.

In any case, Trump could pardon his family, lawyers and other companions. However, the pardon only applies to offenses against federal laws in which the FBI and not the traditional police are active. The Vance investigation is taking place at the New York state level and would not be affected.

But legal trouble threatens in other places too.
