Donald Trump Ordered to Pay $83.3 Million in Defamation Lawsuit Verdict

The jury will have deliberated less than three hours. Donald Trump will have to pay $83.3 million in damages for having defamed the author E. Jean Carroll, jurors in Manhattan civil court concluded Friday. Already found responsible for the sexual assault of the ex-columnist in the 1990s, the ex-president appeared for the second time for defamation, for comments made in 2019. Last year, a jury had already inflicted damages of $5 million for similar comments made in 2022.

In detail, the jury awarded E. Jean Carroll $11 million in damages for reputational damage, $7.3 million in financial compensation, and above all $65 million in damages.

Trump will appeal

Donald Trump had notably treated the former columnist of the magazine Elle “liar”, “crazy” and assured that she was “not (his) type”, repeatedly implying that she was not attractive enough to be sexually assaulted. But during his testimony, he confused a photo of E. Jean Carroll with his ex-wife Marla Maples, footage shown to the jury during the trial.

“This is a big victory for all the women who get back up after being torn down, and a defeat for all the bullies who try to keep them down,” Carroll responded. Donald Trump, on Truth Social, denounced a “ridiculous” verdict and assured that he would appeal, as during the first trial.
