Does the minimum price for animal products make sense?

Yes, because dumping wages are anti-social in the meat industry

The shock was great – at least everyone pretended when it was time for the public to see the conditions under which schnitzel and co. Are made in Germany. Of course, this was not new. And it won’t change as long as meat remains cheap.

Few topics are as sensitive as the food on our plates. Nevertheless, Greens boss Robert Habeck is now demanding a minimum price for animal products. This requirement is – and this is often forgotten – not only ecologically but also socially motivated. The primary aim is not to make us eat fewer pigs, but to pay for the people who process the pigs.

This is also interesting because critics of minimum prices like to refer to social questions: Should only rich be allowed to afford meat? If you ask that, you make a mistake. He thinks of the worker in front of the meat counter in the supermarket – and forgets the worker who prepares the meat. For the latter, the minimum wage remains an empty promise as long as prices don’t go up.

And, of course, the pleasant side effect of a minimum price for animal products should not be forgotten: Social measures can also be good for the climate.
