Just over a year after the presidential election, and currently in the midst of the pandemic crisis, a A group of deputies from Renovación Nacional express their interest for Mario Desbordes, former deputy and current Defense Minister, to run as the party’s presidential candidate.
This is how they recognized The second Camilo Morán, Andrés Longton, Hugo Rey, Jorge Durán, Eduardo Durán and Érika Olivera (independent pro RN), who also seek to capitalize on the place that Senator Manuel José Ossandón may leave, who sees his well-known presidential aspirations threatened due to the judicial process that begins against him for the repeated crime of influence peddling -although they believe in his “innocence” -.
“A group of deputies we have asked (Desbordes) to be our presidential candidate, and we are working hard on that (…) Given the judicial situation that affects Senator Ossandón, which we know will prove his innocence, there remains a space on the social right, “said Morán, former chief of staff of Desbordes and who took his seat in the Lower House after he assumed the Government.
The six “overflow” deputies claim to have talked with him, so that he can “promote a candidacy, not rushing, but step by step”, since they recognize a “conciliatory leadership” that they believe is what Chile needs, and because they see him as “the only one who can give stability.”
“It would be very nice if Mario agreed to be a presidential candidate, because he is a politician who is connected to the needs of the people. He is respectful of the thoughts of others and that in politics is a value. It represents a sector of the right concerned about those who have problems “, highlights the deputy Olivera, independent but part of the RN bench.
Desbordes, who was part – and protagonist – of the main political and social discussions in Congress since the social outbreak, left the front line at the end of July, when he accepted the call of President Sebastián Piñera to take over as Defense Minister.
Until then, he was thinking about a candidacy for the Senate, but then he admitted that this idea “died” after reaching the Executive: “Although the batting told me otherwise, I could not tell the President that, if you summon me in these moments of crisis, with a year and a half ahead that will be historic for Chile, “Desbordes commented last Sunday in The Mercury.
However, according to The second, in the RN bench, composed of 36 deputies -two of them independent-, opinion is not uniform, although several are related to Desbordes: in fact, others look askance at Andres Allamand, a pre-candidate in 2013 and who also went from the Senate to the Government to direct the Foreign Ministry; or to Senator Francisco Chahuán, who has made no secret of his intentions to join the presidential race.
