Doctors recommend patients not to cancel appointments for fear of contagion of COVID-19

According to specialists from the health union, people are postponing and canceling their medical appointments for fear of catching the COVID-19 coronavirus in cynics or medical centers.

Doctors assure that this fear is “exaggerated” and that it should be put aside. In addition, the fact of suspending a medical appointment can lead to severe health problems for the patient.

For the doctor Julio Cesar Castellanos, director of the San Ignacio hospital, people should also worry about the diseases that already existed before the arrival of COVID-19.

“There is an exaggerated fear and we are more afraid of the coronavirus than of cancer, heart attack or appendicitis. Out of fear, we are unnecessarily delaying the health processes, ”said the doctor.

Patients and health users gave their point of view on the fear that people have when visiting an emergency room or a clinic.

“One is afraid to come, but I had to get here because of the disability,” said Liliana Vargas, a relative of a patient.

For his part, Giovanni Coba, a relative of a patient with appendicitis, pointed out that “they are not giving priority to people entering the emergency room. They say that in Bogotá there is no space to operate ”.

Health professionals invite people not to neglect their health for fear of catching coronavirus in a doctor’s office or an emergency room. They also recommend complying with all biosafety protocols when visiting one of these health spaces.
