Djokovic will not play the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Sinner will be seeded number 1

Novak Djokovic will not play the Masters 1000 in Madrid which will start next week on the red clay courts of the Spanish capital. The 36-year-old Serbian world number one, fresh from the semi-final in Monte Carlo lost against Ruud, should return to action in Rome (6-19 May) to prepare for the Roland Garros, the second Slam of the year (of which he is the defending champion) scheduled in Paris from May 20th. The presence of Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion in Madrid, is also in strong doubt: the Spaniard, who has already missed the Barcelona tournament, is struggling with a problem in his right forearm and will only release his reserves in the next few hours.

Sinner seeded number 1

Djokovic’s forfeit promotes Jannik Sinner a number 1 seed of the Madrid tournament. The 22-year-old from South Tyrol, number 2 in the world, is ready to return to the field after the Monte Carlo semi-final lost against Tsitsipas. In Madrid he will not defend any points having been absent last year, so he will have the opportunity to get closer to Djokovic who leads the ranking with 10,035 points (8,750 for the blue). The draw for the men’s draw for the Masters 1000 in Madrid is scheduled for Monday 22 April at 11am.
