DJ Laurent Garnier returns to Dijon to present a documentary retracing his career

The French legend of electro Laurent Garnier presents, this Thursday, January 27 at the cinema L’Eldorado in Dijon, the documentary “Laurent Garnier: Off the record”. Back on the journey of the DJ who made the good times of the Dijon club L’An-fer in the early 90s.

Laurent Garnier has been making the planet dance for thirty years. The documentary Laurent Garnier : Off the Record, signed Gabin Rivoire, traces not only the journey of this iconic DJ but also the advent of electro music in the world he helped found.

This ground swell went through Dijon. Between 1990 and 1994, Laurent Garnier mixed every first Friday of the month at An-Fer. He was doing the beautiful nights at the Rex in Paris, his second home. Here he is also in regular residence in this Dijon club, run by Frédéric and Franck Dumélie.

An-Fer was then at the forefront of this musical trend in the provinces. House and Techno are however only emerging. This music is often demonized by the authorities who systematically associate it with drugs. But in Dijon, we succumb to the trance as shown by this extract from a report from France 3 Bourgogne.

In 1998, the first Techno Parade in Paris brought electro music out of the shadows. Laurent Garnier, who closes the Bastille parade with his set, speaks of a “major victory“.

It is also this fight for celebration, sharing, freedom and against ostracism that this documentary tells. “I hope this film will show what this music is, that it is completely acceptable and that there is nothing horrible“, joked Laurent Garnier last December when the documentary was released.

Laurent Garnier and Gabin Rivoire, the documentary filmmaker, are present this Thursday evening at the L’Eldorado cinema in Dijon to discuss after the screening of the film. A documentary of which the DJ of nearly 56 years has obviously signed the soundtrack.
