Dix Hills Man Convicted of Murdering Elderly Uncle in Levittown

NEW YORK — Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced Friday that a Dix Hills man has been convicted of murder for stabbing to death his elderly uncle in Levittown in 2019.

David Cahoon, 44, was convicted by a jury Thursday after trial before Judge Robert Bogle of second-degree murder; Possession of a counterfeit instrument in the second degree; and grand theft in the fourth degree.

“William Cahoon was a regular at the Milleridge Inn, and when he stopped going to the restaurant for several weeks, the staff knew something was wrong,” District Attorney Donnelly said. “A welfare check revealed that William had been brutally stabbed repeatedly by his nephew, the defendant, who had also stolen $1,800 from the man. David Cahoon’s greed gave way to extreme violence and he will now spend decades in prison paying for the life he took.”

The district attorney confirmed that on January 4, 2019, members of the Nassau County Police Department found the body of 70-year-old William Cahoon in a back bedroom of his Levittown home with approximately 16 stab wounds to the head, neck and chest.

Officers responded to the home after staff at the Milleridge Inn requested a wellness check on the victim. Mr. Cahoon was a regular at the establishment, having dined there every Friday and Saturday for 25 years. The restaurant staff became concerned for his well-being after he did not show up for approximately four weeks.

Following an investigation, it was determined that the victim was murdered on December 3, 2018 by his nephew, David Cahoon.

NCPD detectives took Cahoon into custody on June 19, 2019.

The investigation also revealed that the defendant stole $1,800 from the victim by fraudulently cashing a check from the victim’s bank account.

The jury deliberated for about a day before returning their verdict. The defendant is due back in court for sentencing on July 7, 2023, when he faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison.
