Three workers had climbed into a shaft on the grounds of the Hotel Böck in Brunn am Gebirge to carry out maintenance work. “Shortly after entering the shaft, two of the workers collapsed, the third could still save themselves. Apparently the shaft was filled with sewage gases.
The fire brigade from Brunn am Gebirge, an ambulance from Brunn and Vösendorf, the ambulance and the Red Cross district operations manager from Mödling, a rescue helicopter from Vienna and numerous executive forces were alerted to the emergency call.
Despite the rapid arrival of the emergency services, the two workers who remained in the shaft could only be recovered dead. The third colleague had not sustained any injuries, but was looked after on site and transported to the hospital for observation together with a first aid worker who may also have inhaled the gas.
