District Council Election|171 candidates compete for 88 directly elected seats, turnout rate becomes the focus|Yahoo News|Continuously updated

[Yahoo News District Election Report]Today (December 10) is the voting day for the district council election. 4.33 million voters can participate in the “geographical constituency” voting from 8:30 this morning to 10:30 tonight. The election has been going on for 8 hours. The government announced that the voting rate as of 4:30 pm was 19.19%, with 831,000 people participating in the district council election. The “Regional Committee” sector election ended at 2:30, with a turnout rate of 96.92%, with 2,454 people voting.

In the 2019 District Council election, the turnout rate was 47.26% in the first 8 hours (0730-1530), with 1.953 million people voting; as for the previous election, the turnout rate as of 4:30 pm was 52.14%, with 2.154 million people voting.

After the reorganization of the electoral system, the number of “local constituencies” of the District Council has been greatly reduced from 452 in the previous term to only 44 at present. Each constituency now has 2 directly elected seats, which are elected by the “two-seat single-vote system”, that is, Each voter casts only one vote, and the two candidates with the most votes are elected.

In this year’s direct election, 171 candidates competed for 88 seats, with an average of 1.94 candidates competing for 1 seat. There are more candidates competing for “Yau Tsim Mong South” and “Tai Po North”, with 6 candidates each. “Yahoo News” also interviewed the local residents about the situation of “Tai Po North” earlier.

No non-establishment figures have “entered the gate” to run for office

It is worth mentioning that there are no non-establishment candidates as candidates in this district council election. Currently, anyone who signs up to participate in district direct elections must first be nominated by three members from each of the “regional committees”, commonly known as the “three committees”.

The turnout rate in this year’s district election has become one of the focuses of the news. Chief Secretary for Administration Chan Kwok-kee recently stated that there would be no estimate of turnout and no hard target. However, in order to promote the district elections, the government held a “District Election Colorful Day” yesterday and convened nearly a hundred singers and artists, including Wang Mingquan, Kwong Mei-wan, Maria Cordero and others, hold large-scale concerts in West Kowloon.

According to data, the turnout rate in the 2019 district election was 71.23%, the highest ever. As for the last direct district election, the 2021 Legislative Council election, the turnout rate for the district direct election was 30.2%.

Number of seats not directly elected: 382

In addition to the 88 directly elected seats, this district election has added a new category of “District Committee” with 176 seats, which are elected by unanimous vote by members of the “three associations” in the 18 districts. The current number of members of the “Three Associations” is 2,533. The voting time for the “Regional Committee” sector is from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. In addition, the government will announce the list of 179 appointed district councilors after the election; 27 “ex-officio councilors” will continue to be served by the chairmen of each rural committee.

“Yahoo News” will keep up with the latest news about district elections and continuously update reports.
