Disinfectant, symptom: What you need to know about the corona virus in Germany – guide

The corona virus is spreading in Germany – and unsettling many. Little is known about the virus. BILD provides a quick overview: YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT!

What do I do if I suspect I am infected?

  • Important: If you suspect an infection, you should not sit in a doctor’s waiting room! Because there is a great risk of infecting other people.
  • Citizens should contact their family doctor by phone if they have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing within 14 days of traveling to a risk area.
  • There is no central emergency number, the local health authorities are responsible.
If Sars-CoV-2 is suspected, the family doctor can arrange a laboratory examination.
  • Anyone who has had contact with infected people should report to their health department regardless of the symptoms.
  • Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) called on the population not to go to the doctor every time they cough. Instead, those affected should go for an examination at home, said Spahn.

Who is Corona dangerous for?

  • Men are at higher risk of dying from coronavirus infection than women. This was the result of an analysis by the Chinese authorities of more than 44,000 infected people.
  • And: the older the patient, the higher the risk of death! From the age of 50 it increases significantly, people from the age of 80 are most at risk.

How do I protect myself from infection?

  • Thorough hand washing offers the best protection! Ideally after contact with other people.
  • Use handkerchiefs only once and then throw them away immediately.
  • Liquid disinfectant is recommended for on the go. Important: It should be an alcoholic disinfectant that is especially suitable for the hands.

Is mouth-nose protection good protection?

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) confirmed that mouth and nose protection can be useful for people with acute illnesses so that they do not pass the droplets on to their fellow human beings.

According to the RKI, this can be, for example, a face mask that surgeons wear. But it has to fit snugly and be replaced when it is wet.

How is the disease going?

  • For the first few days, the symptoms are like flu, so they are non-specific.
  • “However, if the infection penetrates deep into the airways and patients develop pneumonia, it is a complication and further examinations are necessary,” says Dr. Susanne Huggett, Head of Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention at Asklepios Clinics.
  • Treacherous: Some people carry the corona virus within themselves, but do not show any symptoms themselves.

How do colds and flu differ?

  • Dr. Susanne Huggett: “Coughing, body aches, runny nose, feeling sick – the tricky thing about the virus is that it is precisely these symptoms that make it noticeable. So like a classic flu. ”
  • The Robert Koch Institute points out that the majority of coronavirus cases have mild to no symptoms. But: The mortality rate (percentage of deaths) is higher than that of the flu. Because, on the one hand, the majority of illnesses are asymptomatic and therefore not known at all. And because – unlike Corona – there is effective vaccination protection against flu, which significantly lowers the infection and death rate.

Am I immune after an infection?

Prof. Klaus-Dieter Zastrow, chief physician of the Hygiene Institute Berlin: “Yes, you are immune after an infection. But whether it is for life or whether the immunization ends again cannot be said at the moment. “

Can the virus be stopped now?

No! Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit (40), virologist and university professor at the University of Hamburg: “Even if we closed all borders and stopped international air traffic, we could only slow the spread a little.”

Labor law: may I stay at home out of caution?

“No,” said employment lawyer Daniel Kuhlmann at BILD Live, “this is not possible for purely preventive reasons.”

It is different when the daycare center or school is closed, because: “In an absolute emergency, you have the right to temporarily stay away from the workplace,” says Kuhlmann. An emergency, for example, is when there is no other care option. However, it is best to find a mutually acceptable arrangement with the employer.

An employee who has to stay at home in quarantine should not have to worry about continued payment of wages. That is “as if you were sick”.
