Discovering Faces: Unique Rock Formations in the Alps

You don’t need that much imagination to understand Nina Galli’s amazement. During a walk towards Stossau, the Arnoldstein resident recently discovered a rock formation in the south face of Dobratsch that reminds her of a huge face. She posted a photo of it on Facebook and is happy about the many reactions from users who agree with her. “A woman told me that the sad man, as she calls him, accompanies her on the way to work every morning,” says Galli.

Rock faces or shadows that remind viewers of human features are not uncommon in the Alps. Just last year, a “shadow woman” caused a stir on the Spitzkofel near Lienz. And not far from Arnoldstein is the home of the “pagan girl”, whom the locals christened a long time ago. You can see it from the road on the Slovenian Vršič Pass between turns 16 and 17 at almost 1400 meters above sea level. A display board with a map makes it easier to find the work of art created exclusively by nature in the somewhat confusing, mighty north wall of the 2,647 meter high Prisank or Prisojnik.

The Dobratsch south face with the “sad man” is up to 900 meters high. It was created by a gigantic rock fall that split the mountain during the earthquake on January 25, 1348. Around 30 million cubic meters of rock fell into the Lower Gailtal and created the bizarre landscape that has since been called Schütt. And thanks to Nina Galli, the nature reserve now has one more attraction.
