Disappeared 31 years ago – found in a nursing home in Puerto Rico

THE SPARROW: Patricia Kopta was nicknamed “The Sparrow” because of her sly gait and slight build.

The woman who went by the name “Sparrow” was declared dead in 1999. But then a nurse at a nursing home began to sense owls in the bog.

Patricia Kopta from Pennsylvania was reported missing by her husband in 1992. After several years of searching, the police declared her dead in 1999.

Now the case has taken a new turn.

The local police had no leads until they received information from an Interpol agent and a nurse at a nursing home in Puerto Rico.

This is reported by several international media and the local newspaper Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

At a press conference on Thursday, local police and the Kopta family announced the shocking news: Patricia had been found after a full 31 years.

– We are very grateful that Patty is alive, says sister Gloria Smith.

– You will not believe what we have been through. It is a relief that she is alive, says her husband Robert Kopta, who never remarried.

Sent letter

There was no sign of Patricia for many years, apart from a letter she sent to her husband Robert. There she explained that someone was following her, something she had claimed several times before.

Desperate to find the woman, the investigators spoke to a psychic who said Patricia was dead and her body was lying near water.

Eventually, Patricia was pronounced dead.

In June 1999, an unidentified person was admitted to a nursing home for the elderly on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, which belongs to the United States.

Apart from claiming that she came to the island on a cruise ship from Europe, she is said to have been very reticent about details about her private life.

Brian Kohlhepp, deputy chief of local police in Pennsylvania, says he was contacted a year ago by the Interpol agent and the caregiver who believed the woman on the island could be Patricia Kopta.

– She was known to wander around Naranjito, Corozal and Toa Alta. When she got older, she told details that made it possible to understand who she was, says the police chief.

After a DNA process that lasted nine months, the police were finally able to confirm that the woman was Patricia Kopta.

– Shock, I couldn’t believe it. It was hard for all of us, because my mother, her sister and I worried about her all the time, says Patricia’s sister, Gloria Smith.

Warned of the end of the earth

According to The Guardian, Kopta was a Catholic who could often be seen at Sunday mass before she disappeared in 1992.

Slowly but surely, she began to act strangely. According to her husband, her religious beliefs developed into irrational tirades.

Whether Kopta returns to the USA and Pennsylvania is somewhat uncertain.

She will struggle with both her mental and physical health, and has said she would rather stay in Puerto Rica, according to the Post-Gazette.
