Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – According to Caritas, people with disabilities have a hard time finding a suitable apartment in Baden-Württemberg. Often people have a limited budget and special requirements for the apartments, said a Caritas spokeswoman for the German press agency. Some landlords have reservations about them. In cities like Stuttgart, Karlsruhe or Freiburg, the search for an apartment suitable for the disabled takes an average of two to three years, it said.

According to a study commissioned by Caritas and due to be presented on Thursday, this is also due to a lack of social housing in the country. At the end of 2019, there were only 55,300 social housing for more than 800,000 households at risk of poverty. In order for inclusion in living to work, special – including financial – support and additional awareness-raising campaigns among housing providers and the general public are required.
