Two new films by Steve McQueen, about racism in the UK, are dedicated by the director to the late George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The director announced this on Wednesday after it was announced that his films are part of the selection of Cannes, although the festival will not take place this year due to the corona virus. Mangrove and Lovers Rock are part of a series of five films, which will be shown via Amazon Prime and the BBC. Each part tells a different story, but all five focus on characters dealing with discrimination and racism in the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s.
McQueen started his career as a video artist and now has four full-length films to his name. The most recent is the crime drama Widows. His slavery drama 12 Years a Slave won three Oscars in 2014, including the best film.
Black American George Floyd died last Monday during a heavy-handed arrest. His death led to large-scale demonstrations in the US. Police violence against African Americans has also been outraged in Europe.
