At the 64th Grammy Awards, the Beninese singer was crowned winner of the Best Global Music Album category for her musical project “Mother Nature” released on June 18 2021.

The category winner was announced on social media by the Recording Academy with a tweet that read “Congratulations to the winner of Best Global Music Album – ‘Mother Nature’ @angeliquekidjo #GRAMMYs⟩.

Angélique Kidjo beats Rocky Dawuni, Wizkid and others to win Best World Music Album at the 64th Grammys. This victory becomes the fifth time that Angélique Kidjo has won a Grammy Award.

The awards ceremony takes place this Sunday, April 4, 2022 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The 64th Annual Grammy Awards were scheduled to take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Monday, January 31, 2022, but the Recording Academy postponed it due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The Ghanaian singer was nominated for the Grammys in 2015 for his sixth album titled “Branches of The Same Treein the Best Reggae Album category. This nomination made the singer of “Black Star» the first Ghanaian to be nominated for the Grammys.

Who is Angelique Kidjo?

Angélique Kidjo was born on July 14, 1960 in Ouidah, Republic of Benin. His mother was Yoruba and his father Fon.

She grew up listening to traditional Beninese music, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, James Brown, Manu Dibango, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Osibisa and Santana.

By the age of six, Kidjo was performing with his mother’s theater troupe, giving him an early appreciation for traditional music and dance.
