Director of Zürcher Verkehrsbetriebe: BAG should clarify protective masks – Switzerland

(gb.) In an interview with the NZZ, Franz Kagerbauer, director of the Zurich Transport Association, criticizes the Federal Office of Public Health. “It is time to clarify: Those who wear a mask protect their fellow human beings,” says Kagerbauer. At the beginning of the pandemic, the government heard that the masks would not do much. This caused confusion. According to Kagerbauer, only 5 to 10 percent of Zurich public transport passengers wear a mask.

Specifically, Kagerbauer demands that the Federal Office respond better to the cities: «In densely populated areas like here in Zurich, the conditions are different than in rural regions. That should be taken into account ». In this regard, efforts are being made towards Bern, said Kagerbauer in the NZZ.

Kagerbauer, as he told the NZZ, is currently against a mask requirement. It was right to rely on personal responsibility. But: “To convey this, we, the federal government and the industry together, still have to make great communication efforts”. One reason that Kagerbauer speaks against the obligation is that it is difficult to enforce in practice, for example because the transport police are underpaid.
