Director Moonlight is making a sequel to Lion King

Disney is working on a sequel to The Lion King. That film is directed by Barry Jenkins, known for Moonlight in If Beale Street could talk.

Jenkins himself confirmed this on Tuesday. In the 1990s, I helped my sister raise two children. So I grew up with these characters, ”he says. He calls The Lion King’s earlier films “a wonderful story of friendship, love and legacy.”

Jenkins previously won the Oscar for best direction with If Beale Street could talk, and that of best film before Moonlight. Both films are about the living conditions of black Americans. The Lion King series seems far removed from his oeuvre, but Jenkins points out that he is once again depicting ‘the lives of characters from the African diaspora’.

The original Disney cartoon dates back to 1994 and tells the story of the young lion Simba. A reworked version from 2019 used new technology to bring everything to life. Jenkins would continue to work with the same technology as the film that was shown in theaters last year.
