NOS News•today, 4:07 PM•Adjusted today, 4:48 PM

Part of a dike on the Stuwweg in Maastricht has been washed away. Rijkswaterstaat reports this. The water from the drainage canal therefore flows into the Maas. There is no danger to the environment.

The water therefore washes away much faster than intended. According to a spokesperson for the South Limburg fire brigade, there are mainly houseboats on the site, and they are being evacuated. According to Rijkswaterstaat, this concerns 20 houseboats that have been evacuated. They can become crooked due to the fast flowing water.

Rijkswaterstaat Zuid reports on X that the spillway is damaged:

A spillway ensures that high water can be regulated. Spillways are found in dikes and drain excess water. The spillway at the Stuwweg is damaged and water is therefore flowing over the spillway. According to Rijkswaterstaat, this concerns a construction of 50 meters across the width where the water flows away.
