Diesel scandal: Daimler again costs up to 1.5 billion euros – economy

Again up to one and a half billion euros! The diesel affair costs the car maker Daimler significantly more than previously thought.

For 2019, an additional 1.1 to 1.5 billion euros in additional costs is expected, the group said on Wednesday in Stuttgart. It is about “expected additional expenses for ongoing administrative and judicial proceedings and measures relating to Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles in different regions and markets,” the statement said.

Daimler had already set aside a total of around 1.6 billion euros for this last year.

The additional expenses for the diesel problems are not yet taken into account. They mainly affect the Cars and Vans business segments, it said. Without the additional costs for 2019, the vans are already in the red with the operating result.

Daimler will present the complete balance sheet on February 11. In view of the high costs also in other areas, especially when starting up the production of electric cars and the development of automated driving, CEO Ola Källenius has prescribed a savings program for the group.

By the end of 2022, he wants to save around 1.4 billion euros in personnel alone and will probably cut more than 10,000 jobs. The investments are also to be capped.
