Food is getting cheaper at a higher rate only in big cities

Since Saturday, the diesel fuel at at least half of the gas stations in the country has exceeded BGN 3.40 per liter and the price has risen to BGN 3.50.

The most expensive is the diesel fuel sold in Shell and Petrol – BGN 3.44 per liter. This is about 5% above its price in the first days of June, when it was BGN 3.28. But in the retail outlets of the other chains there is a significant increase in recent days and in practice there are only a limited number of stations where diesel can be refueled for less than BGN 3.40.

Another fuel that has become significantly more expensive in recent days is the more expensive high-octane gasoline, which in some chains is listed as 98-octane, and in others – with 100 octane. It more and more often costs over BGN 3.70 per liter, and the most expensive is in Shell – BGN 3.76 per liter. At the beginning of June, its price did not exceed BGN 3.50.

The rise is against the background of a new rise in oil prices on world markets last week.

The new increase in fuel prices has not yet affected food prices, which are following their seasonal course and have mostly fallen in price in the last week. This is due to the release of more and more fruits and vegetables on the market.

In some regions of the country, however there are quite large differences in wholesale food prices For example, sugar is sold on the markets from BGN 1.70 per kilogram in the capital to BGN 3 in Ruse, which is about 60%. (See the map)

The hen’s eggs cost from 22-23 cents each in Plovdiv to 32 cents in the capital. However, their final price in the shops is much higher and the most expensive ones are sometimes sold for 44-46 cents each.

In the case of fruits and vegetables, however, the situation is rather the opposite – the larger the city and the more markets there are, the cheaper they become.

For example, greenhouse tomatoes fell in price in one week by 9% in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas, and greenhouse cucumbers – by 16%. Elsewhere, the reduction is much less.

Strawberries are also cheaper by almost 9% in a week, and cherries, which are entering their season – by 21.7%. Both fruits are sold wholesale at about BGN 3.60 – 3.67 per kilogram.

However, the average food price is about 22-25% higher than last year at the same time.
