Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin left her helpline at home on Saturday. There she missed two messages about isolating herself as close contact to the corona-positive.
On Saturday night, two text messages were sent out in which Finnish government members who had been in close contact with the country’s foreign minister, Pekka Haavisto, were asked to go into isolation.
The text messages were sent by the government’s security chief after Haavisto tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday, it reports Finnish state channel Yle.
Hours after Haavisto tested positive, she set out for the city of Helsinki. She has since complained at a press conference that she did not isolate herself:
– I’m sorry I did not understand that I had to do it, wrote Prime Minister Marin on Facebook.
The opposition has reacted to the fact that she did not go into isolation voluntarily, and she has subsequently been branded as “irresponsible” by the parliamentary representative Mia Laiho, who represents the liberal-conservative Samlingspartiet.
Did not understand that she had to be isolated
The 36-year-old prime minister has explained to several Finnish media that the messages were sent to a service telephone she did not have with her, but that Haavisto called her on another telephone the same evening. Without her then realizing that she had to be in isolation.
– On Saturday night, I was informed about Minister Haavisto’s corona infection and at the same time received an assessment that there is no need for special measures. In this context, I was not told to avoid contacts, tweeted Marine Sunday night.
In her tweet, Marin added that she only read the instructions sent by the security chief about self-insulation on Sunday.
– I usually have both phones, but this was not the case since it was a day off. It was only in the morning that I noticed and read the messages on the other phone, Marin told the newspaper Evening News.
Isolated on Sunday
The Prime Minister also wrote in her tweets that she started following the instructions on Sunday immediately after reading the messages, and that she took a coronate test, writes Yle.

Marine’s night out in Helsinki was first reported by the entertainment magazine Stop, who wrote that the Prime Minister had been out at at least two different bars in the city with his husband and a few other people.
