Diario Extra – 40 Costa Rican soccer players in European cups

QUESTION: Francisco Rodríguez Siles (Desamparados, San José). I would like to know who are the Costa Rican footballers who have performed in European cups in the history of UEFA.
ANSWER: Forty Costa Ricans (36 men and four women) advanced to the major UEFA events, in the Champions League, the Europa League, the Super Cup and the now-defunct Intertoto Cup.
Costa Rica premiered in 1990 with Ronald González and Hernán Medford, at Dinamo Zagreb, in Yugoslavia. But they were eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Atalanta of Bergamo, Italy.
Keylor Navas appears with the most matches in European cups, with 75 appearances. He did so in the Europa League (12 games), the Champions League (61 games) and the European Super Cup (two games).
One step down appears Shirley Cruz, with 62 games in the Women’s Champions League from 2007 to 2017. The first 37 with Olympique Lyonnais and the remaining 25 with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). This is the list of 40 Ticos in European glasses.
