In this way, ORF’s close cooperation with Austrian film producers, filmmakers, film festivals and funding institutions is expanded by an important area in a joint initiative by ORF, Diagonale and the online video store Flimmit.
ORF program director Mag. Kathrin Zechner: “Bringing Austrian cinema diversity into your living room”
“Especially in times like these, Austrian film needs a strong presence. As the diagonal as a performance show of the domestic film industry cannot take place this year, it was particularly important to me to offer the filmmakers a platform through which they can reach their audience simply and easily. I am pleased that ORF-, kulturMontag ‘together with Diagonale is now bringing Austrian cinema diversity into the living room at home.”
ORF television film director Mag. Katharina Schenk: “Austrian film brings people together”
“I am very pleased that the Diagonale’20 on Flimmit and in the ORF programs has been given a virtual home this year. Austrian filmmakers, film enthusiasts, film friends and all those who want to get it right now or now have access to a curated selection of films with a multifaceted accompanying program on television and radio. I would like to thank all partners and institutions with which we have put this initiative together and hope that the exchange in the digital space will be as lively as it is during the festival in Graz. In times of social distancing, Austrian film brings people together. ”
Sebastian Höglinger and Peter Schernhuber, Festival Director Diagonale: “A little bit of diagonal flair for at home”
“The selection is not representative and, of course, film festivals and cinema visits are social events that cannot be replaced online. Especially not if the festival program was conceived as an analog cinema event. When selecting, it was also important to take legal requirements and personal wishes into account. Because of all these restrictions we are very happy to be able to offer at least a little diagonal flair for at home for a month! First of all, we would like to thank the filmmakers, the enthusiastic colleagues from Flimmit, who have put a lot of effort into the past hours and days, the restless Diagonale team and the colleagues on ORF! ”

ORF 2 with current reporting and “culture Monday”
Not only the current ORF-2 reporting, but also the “culture Monday” (March 23, 10:30 p.m.) is dedicated to the diagonals: for a year, the two have prepared their program meticulously, with passion and passion, invited guests and events organized. Then Corona came and undid all plans. The cancellation of the diagonal in Graz was a hard blow for the two directors Sebastian Höglinger and Peter Schernhuber, since the annual film festival is extremely important for the industry. But legal agreements, temporary contracts, and financial and human resources also made a shift impossible. In general, there is also the question of what happens to those films that would have been released in the coming weeks. What do you do with this traffic jam of new films that might be postponed to summer or autumn? There will have to be drawbacks. But as is well known, necessity also makes you inventive. Together with the ORF video-on-demand platform Flimmit, Sebastian Höglinger and Peter Schernhuber are breaking new ground and are presenting their “unfinished” edition of this year’s diagonal. Martin Traxl in a Skype conversation with the two diagonal leaders.
