Diabetic Patient’s Guide to Eating Sweets and Sugars: Expert Tips and Advice

Dr. Hisham El-Hafnawy, former dean of the National Diabetes Institute and head of the National Diabetes Committee at the Ministry of Health, said that a diabetic patient can eat sweets and sugars just like others, but with controls so as not to affect blood sugar.

He explained in a special statement to “The Seventh Day” that a diabetic patient can eat sweets in a small amount and practice physical activity afterward, such as: brisk walking for a quarter of an hour, so that the rate does not increase. Normal blood sugar.

He continued, saying: The patient should not eat sweets in large quantities, even if he increases the dose of insulin or medications he is taking.

He added that a diabetic patient can live a normal life and eat sugars without deprivation, but if he adheres to a healthy lifestyle that includes rationing the amounts of foods that raise his blood sugar, such as: carbohydrates, and practicing physical activity, while adhering to taking medications on time.

He pointed out that the amount of candy specified by the patient must be proportional to the dose of medication prescribed by the treating physician.

On the other hand, the American Diabetes Association confirmed that diabetics can eat sweets or chocolate as part of a healthy meal plan or with exercise.

According to the Medical News website, a healthy eating plan for diabetics includes reducing saturated fats, the least amount of salt and sugar, and eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins.
