“In fact, visual impairment and blindness will reduce the patient’s quality of life and become a burden on the family,” explained dr. Yeni.

“Eye examinations in DM patients are very important to prevent blindness and should be part of routine services provided by health facilities, especially in primary health facilities,” he continued.

It is important to know, DM is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body cannot use the insulin it produces effectively.

While insulin is a hormone that regulates the balance of blood sugar levels.

Then, there is diabetic retinopathy, which is a condition when high blood levels damage the blood vessels in the retina of the eye. As a result, the blood vessels will leak, causing bleeding spots to appear on the retina. This causes blurred vision to blind.
