DeWolff Live Review: Apostles of Seventies RnR Take No Prisoners

My first live meeting with the Dutch DeWolff It cleared up old doubts and created new ones for me. They clarified that they are one of those bands with seductive but not captivating albums that expand on stage and maximize their proposal: apostles of seventies RnR whose only mission on stage is to take no prisoners.

My initial doubt was certified, after the recital they generated another one: is it possible to revitalize and continue the genre without the tics and excesses of the original bands? At the moment it seems not to me. Within a more than notable concert, and because I was looking for some “but”, some anachronisms grated on me, such as the long instrumental developments (too indebted to the time) or the overexcitement of its leader Pablo van de Poel, squeezing out communicative clichés with the audience. But given the enthusiastic response from the public, it’s probably me who is trying to get the cat out of the way.

Because they have more than enough attitude and musical knowledge: to the sound of “I’m the Wolf” by Howlin’ Wolf they appeared with their impeccable battle suits ready to start a nostalgic-musical ceremony where hard, progressive, RnR and the boogie twins with textbook fluidity.
And apart from the high level of instrumentation, their greatest gift is that of sifting all the founding influences of the great names of the period without sounding like a copy or a tribute: they simply mix everything to achieve their own sound.

A devastating start with the Purpeliana “Night Train”, a “RU My Saviour?” that draws on Faces, Derringer and Foghat, “Live Like You” with echoes of Budgie or the only concession to rest, Will o’ the Wisp (a cross between Santana and Peter Green’s Mac), were several of the highlights of the night . The finale is the mammoth “Rosita”, a progressive delirium lasting more than 20 minutes that works as its own “Whipping Post”. Timeless music without (sadly) generational change…
