Devastation on A27: caravan scattered in debris on highway, two seriously injured | Utrecht

A caravan was completely destroyed in an accident on the A27 near Houten. The debris was scattered across the highway. Two people were seriously injured in the collision and were taken to hospital. Police are looking for witnesses to the accident.

At around 5:45 p.m. a collision occurred on the A27 between a car with a caravan and another motorist. The caravan’s owners, Belgian holidaymakers, and their two dogs were unharmed, but their caravan was destroyed in the accident. They would have been on their way back from their holiday in the Netherlands. The entire contents of their caravan are spread over the road surface.

The driver of the other car, a BMW with a Bulgarian license plate, was freed from the car by the fire service. The car came to a stop across the road against the guardrail. Due to the seriousness of the accident, emergency services responded en masse. An air ambulance was also called in, but it did not eventually land. The driver and another passenger were rushed to hospital.

Research

Police are looking for witnesses and CCTV footage of the crash. The Traffic Accident Analysis (VOA) and the Tactical Traffic Team are investigating the crash.

The A27 is completely closed from the Lunetten junction in the direction of Gorinchem. The enclosed traffic has been diverted by Rijkswaterstaat. Motorists are advised to follow the signs for Den Haag and ‘s Hertogenbosch (A12 and A2) from the Lunetten junction. The road will remain closed for the time being. The debris must be cleared from the road.
