Deutsche Post should reduce postage

Dhe argument about that Letter postage Deutsche Post is going into the next and possibly decisive round. With a formal request to reset the letter prices retrospectively, the Federal Association of Parcel and Express Logistics (BIEK) is putting politicians and market supervision under pressure to make decisions. According to a court ruling, the current postage approval from 2019 violates the Postal Act. This means that the Federal Network Agency is obliged to revoke this permit and to revise it, according to the application. “As a result, the postage from the current 80 cents for a standard letter has to be significantly reduced retrospectively,” said BIEK chairman Marten Bosselmann of the FAZ.

The postal competitors rely on a decision by the Federal Administrative Court. Accordingly, only the postage increase to 70 cents for the years 2016 to 2018 was illegal. According to the BIEK, the objections of the highest administrative court are valid in the same way for the postage approved until 2021. Because in this decision, too, the network agency relied on the high profits that former state postal companies achieve in other EU countries. But there is noisy Bundesverwaltungsgericht no basis in the Postal Act. As the reasoning for the decision now available shows, the court sees further serious violations. It is criticized that the network agency also use the costs of the parcel service in order to increase the postage. Because the Post delivers letters and parcels to a large extent together in the “composite delivery”, the cost allocation repeatedly leads to disputes. “These findings are a milestone for us. The court is responding to our criticism that the postage is structurally set too high, ”said Bosselmann.
