Detention and Sentencing of Eduards Babariko: Injustice and Political Motivation

Babariko Jr., 33, was charged with tax evasion, organizing riots and inciting social hatred, among other charges, and prosecutors requested a 10-year prison sentence.

Eduards Babariko has already spent three years in pre-trial detention, and they will be counted towards his sentence.

Babariko was also fined almost 2,000 euros.

Eduards Babariko was detained in June 2020 when he and his father were on their way to the election commission to submit voter signatures, which were necessary for Viktor Babariko’s candidacy for the start of the presidential election.

At the time, the former banker was considered the most promising challenger to long-time Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, but the regime prevented him from running in the elections.

In July 2021, the Supreme Court of Belarus sentenced Babariko senior to 14 years in prison.

This trial has been recognized by human rights defenders as a politically motivated farce.
