1,017 medals are awarded at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, 111 of which are in swimming alone, a world sport in which Switzerland has been a tiny figure for so long. Before Jérémy Desplanches went to the final in the 200 meter medley on Friday, Switzerland had only won an Olympic medal in swimming, in 1984 in Los Angeles, where Etienne Dagon was third in the 200 meter chest. Desplanches has now also secured bronze, which means that the Swiss delegation already has nine medals for sure before the weekend; seven had been the minimum goal of Swiss Olympic.
