Despite the health crisis, Swiss hospitals did not run out of blood in 2021

Despite the pandemic, the supply of Swiss hospitals was assured for all blood products in 2021. The average age of donors of blood stem cells, necessary for serious illnesses, has fallen, a development welcomed by Transfusion CRS Switzerland.

Last year, “blood donation remained possible at all times and in complete safety thanks to the proven protection plan”, noted the organization in a press release published on Wednesday. It recorded just over 268,000 donations in 2021, compared to around 266,000 the previous year.

Demand rose slightly, for the various blood products (erythrocyte concentrates, ie red blood cells, platelet concentrates and fresh frozen plasma).

Transfusion CRS Switzerland notes that despite the tensions weighing on the health sector, the eleven regional transfusion services have managed to keep the rate of loss at a low level (0.9%). The organization attributes this result to the great flexibility shown by these structures in times of the Covid crisis.

The online reservation system for donation dates introduced in 2020 is also highlighted. This made it possible to solicit donors as needed.
